Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn has endorsed Donald Trump for president, becoming one of the latest elected Republican officials to throw their support behind the former president. Blackburn praised Trump for his accomplishments in office, noting that under his leadership, the economy boomed, gas prices were low, inflation was under control, and the country’s national security was strengthened.
Blackburn’s endorsement comes after Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida also endorsed Trump earlier this month, becoming the third Republican from the state to support him. Although Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to enter the race, Trump is currently leading in the polls by double digits against him.
The former president is considered the frontrunner in the Republican race for the nomination, with many supporters touting his successful track record in office.
However, a recent poll from Quinnipiac University revealed that a majority of Americans believe that Trump should be disqualified from running for the White House due to criminal charges he faces in ongoing local and federal investigations.
Trump was charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records after an investigation into hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels in 2016. While he denies the allegations and has pleaded not guilty to all the charges, the charges could potentially impact his chances of winning the presidency in 2024.
Despite these challenges, Trump’s fundraising efforts have skyrocketed since news of his indictment broke, with his campaign reporting nearly $18.8 million in fundraising during the January-March quarter of 2023.
Additionally, the campaign has pointed out that Trump raised nearly $15.4 million in just two weeks after news of his indictment broke, making him the first former president in U.S. history to be charged with a crime.
Blackburn’s endorsement is yet another sign of the strong support that Trump continues to enjoy among Republican voters. As the race for the nomination heats up, it remains to be seen whether other candidates will be able to challenge his dominance and secure the support of the party’s base.
