The crisis at our southern border shows no signs of abating under the Biden administration’s misguided policies. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, has joined the growing chorus of voices sounding the alarm over the administration’s mishandling of the situation. In an interview with Fox News, Cuellar revealed that a staggering 10,000 people crossed the border illegally into the United States in just two days.
The impending expiration of the Trump-era Title 42 policy has only worsened the crisis. Cuellar warned that the number of illegal crossings is set to multiply in the coming weeks.
Border Patrol facilities are already operating at overcapacity, with only west Texas remaining under capacity. If NGOs and border communities are unable to accommodate the influx of migrants, Border Patrol has been instructed to release them onto city streets.
This is an unsustainable and dangerous approach. Customs and Border Protection facilities are already strained in multiple sectors, and the release of migrants at bus stops, gas stations, supermarkets, and various towns and cities along the border will only exacerbate the problem. It puts a tremendous burden on local resources and creates potential security risks for American citizens.
The termination of Title 42 sends a troubling message to would-be migrants. It effectively erases the consequences for illegal border crossings, serving as a magnet for even more people considering unlawful migration.
Cuellar estimates that approximately 150,000 migrants from Mexico border states are already planning to cross into the U.S. once the policy is lifted. This influx, coupled with the lack of repercussions, will further overwhelm Border Patrol and undermine our national security.
Immediate action is required to address this crisis. The Biden administration must reverse its decision to end Title 42 and implement effective measures to secure our borders.
Cuellar proposes the deployment of immigration judges at border towns and cities to expedite the asylum process and facilitate swift deportations for those not eligible for asylum. This approach would alleviate the strain on our system and discourage fraudulent claims.
